Where to park

Car theft is an increasingly popular crime. Car burglars used to be divided into two categories: joyriders, that stole your car to drive it around for a few hours, and scrappers, who stripped your car of all valuable parts to sell it on the black market. Nowadays, with counterfeiting becoming more and more elaborate, cars are often stolen to be re-sold with fake documentation, or to be taken to less developed countries (like South America or Eastern Europe), where control is less strict and they can easily be sold.

There are steps you can take to reduce the risk of having your car stolen. Asides from the obvious ones (car alarm, pitbull in the back seat), there are easy, cheap ways to do this, and they all relate to where your car is parked.

- If you own a garage space, use it. Locking your car inside the garage and then locking the garage door provides a lot more security than simply parking on the street.

- If you have no other option but to park on the street, do so in an area that is well lit and where a lot of people can see your car.

Just by parking in the right place, your car will be a lot less likely to be stolen, so never underestimate this.
